1. What BLOCKr is
BLOCKr is an online tool that lets South African schools raise money for a specific project. A school puts a photo of the project (a field, a roof, a hall) on a grid, and supporters fund blocks on that grid or give an amount of their choice.
Each campaign is run by its school, not by BLOCKr. The school decides what it is raising money for, sets the block price and receives the money. Card payments go to the school’s own PayFast account; cash and EFT payments go to the school directly. BLOCKr does not hold or receive supporters’ money.
2. Using BLOCKr
Anyone can view a campaign and fund a block. You don’t need an account to give. To pay by card you must be 18 or older, or have permission from a parent or guardian.
School staff sign in with a link sent to their email address. Keep access to that email account secure: anyone who can open the sign-in link can act as you on BLOCKr. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account.
By using BLOCKr you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.
3. Funding a block or giving
When you fund a block or give, you are making a donation to the school for the project described on the campaign page.
- You don’t buy or own the block, the land or anything the school builds. The block is a thank-you that shows your support.
- It isn’t an investment. You won’t receive money, interest or any financial return.
- Some campaigns include a prize draw run by the school. The school is responsible for the draw and its rules.
- If the school is registered to issue tax certificates for donations (section 18A of the Income Tax Act), ask the school for one. BLOCKr doesn’t issue them.
- If you choose cash or EFT, the block is reserved in your name until the school confirms it has received your payment. If the payment doesn’t arrive, the school may release the block for someone else.
4. Payments and fees
Card payments are processed by PayFast, on PayFast’s secure pages. BLOCKr never sees or stores your card details. PayFast’s own terms also apply to your payment.
BLOCKr may ask supporters to add a platform fee of 3% to support the service. During our pilot we don’t charge it. If we introduce it, the amount will always be shown before you pay, and schools on the School plan or sponsored by another school won’t have it added for their supporters.
Refunds are explained in our Refunds policy.
5. Names shown on a campaign
The name you enter when you fund a block is shown publicly on the campaign page, on the block you funded. You can use a nickname, initials or a family name instead of your full name. Your email address and phone number are never shown publicly; they go to the school running the campaign.
Please don’t enter a name that is offensive, misleading or belongs to someone else without their permission. We or the school may remove a name that breaks this rule.
6. Schools and their campaigns
Each school is responsible for its campaigns: that the project is real, that the information on the page is accurate, and that the money is used for the purpose described. If you have a question about a campaign or how the money is being used, contact the school. If you think a campaign is fraudulent, tell us and we’ll look into it.
7. What you may not do
- Don’t use BLOCKr for anything unlawful, including fraud, money laundering or an unlicensed lottery.
- Don’t create a campaign for a school you aren’t authorised to represent.
- Don’t upload content that is offensive, infringes someone’s rights, or shows learners without the consent the law requires.
- Don’t try to get into accounts, data or parts of the system that aren’t yours, or disrupt the service (for example with automated requests).
We may suspend an account or remove a campaign that breaks these rules. Where it’s appropriate, we’ll tell you why and give you a chance to respond.
8. Photos, logos and other content
Schools keep ownership of the photos, logos and text they upload. By uploading them, the school allows BLOCKr to store and display them for running its campaigns and school page. The BLOCKr name, logo and website design belong to BLOCKr.
9. Availability and changes
We work to keep BLOCKr available and secure, but we can’t promise it will always be uninterrupted or free of errors. We may change or improve features. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we’ll update the date at the top and, for school accounts, let you know by email before the change applies.
10. Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act or other South African law. To the extent the law allows:
- BLOCKr isn’t responsible for how a school runs its campaign or uses the money it raises.
- BLOCKr isn’t responsible for losses caused by PayFast, banks, or events outside our reasonable control.
- We aren’t liable for indirect or consequential losses.
We remain responsible for losses caused by our gross negligence or wilful misconduct.
11. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa. If something goes wrong, please contact us first and we’ll try to resolve it. If we can’t, either of us may refer the dispute to a South African court with jurisdiction.
