1. Who this is for
“The school” means the school, its governing body, or a parents’ association or old pupils’ union acting for it. The people the school adds to its BLOCKr account act for the school, and the school is responsible for what they do on BLOCKr.
2. Plans and fees
Free plan
Free. The school can run one campaign at a time.
School plan
- R1,990 for the school year, paid in 10 monthly instalments of R199 from February to November; or
- R1,790 for the year if paid in full by 31 January; or
- R249 a month, month to month.
We invoice the School plan; the invoice shows how to pay. The yearly plan is a commitment for the whole school year: if the school stops early, the remaining instalments for that year are still payable unless we agree otherwise in writing. The month-to-month plan can be cancelled at any time and stops at the end of the month already paid for.
Platform fee
BLOCKr may ask supporters (not the school) to add a 3% platform fee when they pay. It isn’t charged during our pilot, and it isn’t asked for on campaigns of schools on the School plan or sponsored by another school. We’ll give schools at least 30 days’ notice before introducing it or changing fees.
3. Money raised
- Card payments go straight to the school’s own PayFast account. The school’s agreement with PayFast, including PayFast’s fees, is between the school and PayFast.
- Cash and EFT payments go to the school directly. The school confirms them on BLOCKr when the money arrives, or releases the block if it doesn’t.
- BLOCKr never holds the money raised, and doesn’t take a share of it.
- The school issues receipts and, if it is registered to do so, section 18A tax certificates.
- The school handles refund requests from its supporters (see our Refunds policy).
4. The school’s responsibilities
The school agrees to:
- describe each project honestly, and use the money raised for that project or tell supporters clearly if plans change;
- keep its campaign pages, totals and confirmations accurate (for example only confirming cash payments it has actually received);
- keep its PayFast details and its staff list on BLOCKr up to date, and remove people who should no longer have access;
- keep proper records of the money it raises, as the law and its own governance require;
- follow these terms, the Terms of use, and South African law.
5. Learners and photos
Photos of learners are personal information of children. Before uploading a photo in which a learner can be identified, the school must have the consent of a parent or guardian, as the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) requires. When in doubt, use a photo of the place or the project instead of people.
6. Prize draws and football squares
Some campaign types include a prize draw or a football-squares game. Prize draws and games of chance can fall under the Lotteries Act (overseen by the National Lotteries Commission) or gambling laws. The school is responsible for running them lawfully (including any permission it needs) and for publishing fair rules. BLOCKr provides the tool only.
7. Supporters’ personal information
The personal information supporters give when they fund a block (name, email, optional phone number and their payment details from PayFast) is collected for the school. Under POPIA the school is the responsible party for it and BLOCKr is the school’s operator. As operator, BLOCKr agrees to:
- process supporters’ information only to run the school’s campaigns and as the school instructs, and not for our own marketing;
- keep it confidential and limit access to people who need it;
- protect it with appropriate technical and organisational safeguards, including encrypted connections, access rules per school, and keeping card details out of our system entirely;
- use only the service providers listed in our Privacy notice, under terms that protect the information;
- tell the school without undue delay if we have reason to believe supporters’ information has been accessed by someone unauthorised;
- help the school respond to supporters who ask to see, correct or delete their information;
- delete or return the school’s supporter information when the school’s account ends, except records the law requires us to keep.
The school agrees to tell supporters how their information is used (our Privacy notice does this on the school’s behalf), and to use the information only for its fundraising and related communication with them.
8. Pay it forward sponsorship
A school can choose to pay another school’s School plan as a gift. The sponsoring school pays BLOCKr; the sponsored school gets the School plan for the agreed period and its supporters aren’t asked for the platform fee. Either school can end a sponsorship; it then stops at the end of the period already paid for.
9. Ending your account
The school can close its account at any time by contacting us. Before it closes, we can give the school an export of its campaigns and supporters. We may suspend or close an account that breaks this agreement, after telling the school why and, unless the problem is serious or urgent, giving it a chance to fix it.
